"For the Rights of All: Ending Jim Crow in Alaska" Screening & Discussion

Celebrate #ElizabethPeratrovichDay with The Alaska Center!
Join us on Elizabeth Peratrovich Day, February 16, from 1pm-2:30pm for a screening of “For the Rights of All: Ending Jim Crow in Alaska” followed by small group discussions.
Alaska Native Peoples have faced countless obstacles in the fight for equal access to decision-making in our state. Elizabeth Peratrovich, an Alaska Native Sisterhood Grand President, fought at the forefront. Organizing innumerable community members, she paved the way to ensure Indigenous peoples today are able to access housing, education, careers, and even citizenship rights. We keep up her fight and on Elizabeth Peratrovich Day we honor her with a virtual community event.
Join us to see how she advocated for all Alaskans, and together let’s talk about how we can keep her legacy alive in our work moving forward!

Community Conversation: On These Grounds

Join the Alaska Black Caucus in a panel conversation with the filmmakers behind “On These Grounds.”
About the Film
The presence of police in public schools has become an issue nationwide. A documentary film called “On These Grounds” addresses this issue in the context of an incident in a South Carolina high school. That case received national attention when a video of a police officer pulling a Black teenager from her school desk and throwing her across the floor went viral.
ABC will be kicking off Black History Month by screening the film at the Bear Tooth Theater on February 7, 2022.
Filmmakers and film participants will be joining us in the Community Conversation on February 6, 2022.

Celebrating Black History Month

The Black History Month 2022 theme, “Black Health and Wellness,” explores the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora.
The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.
ABC’s Black History Month is supported by AARP Alaska.
