SUMMARY:Veteran's Day Tribute at Mat Su College
DESCRIPTION:One in ten Alaskans are Veterans. On November 11\, 2024\, Mat-Su College (MSC) would like to invite the public to join us in honoring all of those who have served.\nMSC began having an annual Veterans Day event in 2011. Through the years\, the ceremony has grown from a modest gathering around the school flagpole to a sit-down gathering in the Glenn Massay Theater.\nThis year\, our guest speaker will be Shane Holtz with Battle Dawgs – an outdoor rehabilitation program designed for our nation’s combat veterans.\nThere will also be a special presentation In Memoriam of Gene Horner. He was State Director of Bugles Across America for 17 years for Bugles Across America\, a nationwide roster of horn players who fill Taps requests for veteran’s funerals. He was also an important part of our past ceremonies.\nSenior Master Sergeant (Ret.) Tom Spangler serves the campus community as a valued academic advisor and he says\, “Most families in the state call veterans their neighbors and friends. Our ceremony serves to bring the community together each year to celebrate the numerous veterans in the Mat-Su Valley and to honor those service members who have given their lives in service to our country.”\nIn the week leading up to the ceremony\, a Memorial Wall will be set up on campus. \nContact Number: 907-891-1343\nContact email: nmmcdermott@alaska.edu

SUMMARY:Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Alaska’s first and only Veterinary Technology Program\, established earlier this year\, is excited to unveil its new education suite\, created to simulate a modern veterinary clinic. It includes a surgery/anesthesia area\, a diagnostic lab\, x-ray machine\, an ultrasound machine (generously donated by UAA’s ultrasonography program) and more.\nStudents can practice their new training on several animal simulators including a realistic K9 Diesel dog simulator that can be used for anesthesia monitoring training\, CPR training\, phlebotomy\, and several other skill building tasks.\nDr. Judith Montalbano says\, “Establishing a veterinary technician program has long been a dream for me and many others in Alaska’s veterinary community. Starting our first class of students\, this fall has fueled excitement in Alaska’s veterinary care providers. We embrace our role as a trusted and respected partner to the pet-owning public and their veterinary healthcare teams.”\nTraining more veterinary technicians to enter the workforce should make getting veterinary care in a timely manner better for the pet owners of the state.\nThe new program is providing skilled workers for a high-demand industry nationally. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows an expected job growth for Veterinary Technicians and Technologists of 19% from 2023-2033.\nJoin us at the Mat-Su College campus on November 15th at 10 am for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and walk-through.\nIn the spirit of giving back\, we’re also collecting pet food donations for the local animal shelter! Bring a bag of pet food to help support animals in need. \nEvent Contact Nick McDermott\nEvent email: nmmcdermott@alaska.edu
