SUMMARY:Stories of Free Rivers & Wild Salmon
DESCRIPTION:Film Screenings: The Super Salmon & Undammed followed by a panel discussion on free rivers\, salmon\, and the real differences between well-sited hydropower and harmful projects\n📅 February 16\n⏰ 6:30–8:30 PM\n📍 Palmer Train Depot – 610 S Valley Way\, Palmer\, AK 99645\n💻 RSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/…/stories-of-free-rivers-and…\nFree and open to the public.\n🐟The Super Salmon\nThe Super Salmon is an intimate and inspiring look into the impacts of the proposed Susitna-Watana dam on the Susitna River in south-central Alaska. The story outlines the threats posed by the Susitna Dam and the work of the Susitna River Coalition\, which is aimed at protecting our free-flowing\, healthy watershed so that future generations of salmon\, wildlife\, and humans can depend on it as we do today\n🏞️Undammed\nAfter witnessing a massive fish kill on her ancestral home waters\, Yurok tribal attorney Amy Bowers Cordalis dedicated her life to reversing the generations-long destruction wrought by the Klamath River dams. Undammed follows her journey to free the Klamath\, from testifying before Congress to passing down fishing traditions within her young family. Now that the Klamath dams are finally coming down\, she remains confident that the future of her tribe is bright. “It’s not a test\,” Bowers Cordalis says of the largest dam-removal project in US history\, “It will work.”

SUMMARY:The Sun and Space Weather: More Than Meets the Eye\, Palmer Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Where: Palmer Train Depot\nWhen: Doors open at 6:30PM\, Presentation starts at 7PM. Event usually lasts about an hour.\nFree to attend\, no need to register\nPresentation details: The sun’s influence on Earth goes far beyond providing light and warmth. Its constant activity—solar flares\, winds\, and magnetic storms—creates what scientists call space weather. In Alaska\, we see one of its most beautiful effects: the aurora. But solar activity also affects satellites\, power grids\, and radio communication. As humans prepare for missions to Mars and beyond\, understanding how space weather shapes our environment becomes essential for keeping explorers—and our technology—safe in space.

SUMMARY:Rodeo/Barrel Team Try Outs
DESCRIPTION:Rodeo Season is approaching quickly!\nWe have a couple of our competitive horses and ponies that haven’t matched with riders for the 2026 season yet.\nPlease read this entire description.\nMarch 7 we will be having team try outs.\n12 noon to 5pm.\nRSVP required\nThe cost for these lease intro tryouts will be reduced from $65 per person to $50 per person for this special one day only event.\nWhat do you need to know about this Team lease program before trying out?\nThis is a sport\, with the same commitments as any sport\, including sportsmanship\, partnership with your equine team mate\, attending practices\, as well our team has a code of conduct. We expect our team to show respect to one another and those we compete against too. We cheer and encourage those around us and we are available as needed to help one another\, the team and the club.\nThe sooner you get started learning and practicing\, the more fun and rewarding the season will be.\nRequirements to join the team are that riders must able to independently catch\, groom\, tack and ride. With exception to some of our smaller youth riders whose parents/siblings/mentors are able help them with those things.\nWe encourage starting out as early as possible.\nWe have no age limits. (parents are required to supervise small children)\nOur team of independent riders currently ranges from 4 years old to almost 70 years young. 😊\nCompetition horses are leased to one rider (though many also tote family members for lead-line and peewee riders\, we like to see our leased horses treated as family affording parents and children supervised riding opportunities\, as well we’ve had siblings share mounts for weekly races too) team leases are complete with appropriate assigned tack to fit both the horse and the main rider.\nTeam leases options and costs:\nSeasonal leases\, for those only wanting the commitment through the competition months (ending October 1) will be $1000/mo.\nAnnual commitments\, as many of our members choose to continue a relationship with one mount year round brings the cost lower to $750/mo for that annual commitment.\nThese types of leases include unlimited days of riding\, and all amenities the farm offers onsite. We have a pretty active social network at the Farm\, many ride and/or spend quality time every day.\nWe do have a Barn Bucks program where our lessors can clean stalls\, work events\, and do chores to earn discounts of up to 50% off of leases or group lessons each month.\nLessons are available to our lessors at a discount rate as well.\nWe practice during the school year every Sunday afternoon from 2:30 pm to 4 pm\, approximately once a month we haul to an local indoor arena for a little longer and more detailed clinic setting\, and sometimes to avoid in-climate weather.\nOnce school lets out for the summer\, our practices change to Tuesday evenings from 5:30-7 (or so). On these evenings our team members pack their tack trunks for ease and organization of loading for Wednesday races. Practices are $25/week for lessors and boarders\, $50 for those hauling in.\nIndoor practice is $50-65 depending on which arena hosts us.\nWe haul on Wednesday evenings to Midnight Sun Barrel Racers weekly races during the season (May through September\, see schedule in comments). They’re almost every Wednesday May through September. With the finals and the Sunset Finale both held the end of September both on Saturdays.\nMembership for MSBR is $75 a year\,\nHauling offsite also adds $10 a week for transport to Palmer races or $20 to Anchorage races.\nOur riders have entry fees to MSBR (open barrels $30\, open poles $30\, youth barrels $20) each week\, entry fees are cash only\, paid at the entry table to MSBR. There is also a sponsorship obligation with MSBR if you or your child wants to accumulate points for year end awards.\nThese races are run in 4D and 5D formats “where even beginners can be winners”.\nMany of our team members also run Friday night jackpots before rodeos\, and some in the open rodeo adding entry fee budgeting. Some of the rodeos on the Peninsula and Fairbanks can be included\, these “away” shows are earned and only offered when space is available.\nMany people choose to lease before buying\, preparing for that ownership commitment.\nWhile others aren’t in a position to own their own this is a perfect opportunity.\nLeasing gives that one in one bond you can’t normally achieve unless you own your own horse… The Farms team lease program offers what you can’t find elsewhere.\nWe do have several team members who do own their own mounts\, we practice together\, travel together and encourage one another. Some private owners board full time on the farm\, some seasonally and some haul in for practices and events.\nIf you think our Rodeo Team program will work for you\, let’s get you on the schedule March 7 and see if one of our available equine athletes matches to your dreams.\nRSVP and pay with this link https://square.link/u/bNgQnrkS\nNo one else is selling entry to this event. There are so many scammers\, don’t fall for those tricks. Use the link provided or contact us to receive an invoice.\nBoots with heals required\nAll riders under 18 are also required to wear a helmet\, the farm has loaner helmets until you’re able to get your own.

SUMMARY:The Voyage of the Alaska Union w/ Mr. White Keys: Wasilla Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Where: Mat-Su Health Foundation\nWhen: Doors open at 6:30PM\, Presentation starts at 7PM. Event usually lasts about an hour.\nFree to attend\, no need to register\nPresentation details: Eighty Greenhorns from Chicago set out to strike it rich in Alaska in 1898. It was the largest Gold Rush expedition ever launched\, and they had no idea what they were in for. One of the prospectors\, Charles Harris\, toted a 40-pound camera with him during the entire odyssey\, but his images have remained unseen for 120 years.\nIn The Voyage of The Alaska Union\, Mr. Whitekeys reveals a true tale of Alaska History that has never been told. Lavishly illustrated with 100 of Charles Harris’s photographs\, the book relies on century-old diaries\, letters\, manuscripts\, and newspaper accounts that tell the story in the words of the men who were there on the Koyukuk in 1898.\nIt’s the story of tough men who survived with what they had. It may be 70 below\, you may have forgotten to pack your tent on a hundred-mile trek\, but if you had doughnuts\, everything was just fine.
